So I started my own college.
I’m Emma
The story of It’s Your College starts with Emma’s College. When I was 17 years old, I decided not to go to university.
Even though I was a straight-A ‘perfect’ student, I always felt I was learning more outside of school. I loved learning through practice, by doing stuff. Who cared that I could memorize facts super quickly, I wanted to have an impact and learn in the real world.
I decided to create my own college instead. I learned everything I could about how learning works. How education should work. And about how you can direct your own learning.
With all this knowledge, I created Emma’s College.
I’ve consulted big corporates, schools, universities, and NGOs. I’ve given talks to thousands of people.
I have seen the importance of knowing how to learn, to have control over your own development. In every room, I’ve been in.
A heart-to-heart:
In 2018, I shared my story on the TEDx stage. Back then, I had just started Emma’s College. After watching this video you’ll understand, that I didn’t just start Emma’s College because I was interested in learning. I was deeply disappointed that after 17 years of education, I hadn’t learned how to learn. I felt disempowered and frustrated.
So I decided to teach myself instead.
